The longbow of today has a direct connection to history. The traditional longbows revolutionized medieval combat. The archery longbow is the base of modern archery and some say its popularity is on the increase. The longbow is roughly equal to the height of a person who uses it. It is not significantly recurved and has relatively narrow limbs. The longbow has been used by many cultures around the world for hunting and warfare.

By definition, the difference between recurve archery bows and other bows is that the string touches sections of the limbs of recurve bows when the bow is strung. The recurve bows have tips that curve away from the archer when the bow is unstrung. The second curve goes against the natural curve of the bow thus giving the bow greater energy. A recurve bow stores more energy than a straight bow of equivalent size, allowing the arrow to cast further. The recurve is easier to maneuver around in tight areas of the woods than a longbow. The recurve bow ranges in length of 48 to 70 inches but is recommended, by some experts, not to go any less than 58 inches.
